Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: my name is JP een I am a course director in the new Film Production Masters program it is a wonderful honor today to be able to introduce Chase Heavener he is a full sale digital media grad and a founder of visual and video production company fiction which is based right here in Winter Park so we’re all grateful for that right Chase’s career started as a professional wakeboarder he then began producing short wakeboarding documentaries which led him into broadcast production with fuel TV about five years ago he decided to make the move out of wakeboarding and start his production company fiction some of the companies fiction has worked with include ESPN Publix the International Space Station Tim TBO Shephard Ferry Oakley and another a number of high-end visual Brands uh Chase thank you for being with us thank you I really appreciate it uh Chase is gonna we’re going to talk about quadcopters today he has a presentation he’d like to show us and then we’re going to enter into a Q&A so take it away cool well thank you for having me everyone um my name is Chase heaver as you heard and I run a production company here in Winter Park um I’m here today to talk to you guys about quadcopters RC aerial photography um and how that kind of applies to you guys and how you can get into it uh and so what I thought would be cool was first we would show one of our reels for the company uh and then I don’t know if the slides are up yet um and then we kind of get into some price points kind of the technology how to get started kind of from base level to Total profession professional totally crazy custom build of helicopters and then focus on uh this one in particular which is the DJI Phantom uh and this is what I shot this reel on completely um and we’ll really get into this because I think this applies to you guys the best um so I think what would be cool now is to play the real [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you [Music] see it’s so [Music] we are all alone he [Music] [Music] [Music] you you scar to [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we are [Music] you we we we [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] he so let’s talk about getting started um there’s a lot of really cool products out there especially for you guys who have never flown before um the way I got started was with these little Micro RC helicopters they’re about this big kind of range from this to kind of maybe about 4×4 um and they’re really cool they’re really durable uh I kind of fly them in my free time in my office inside and just get to know how to how to fly and how to practice with these things I thought it’ be fun to fly this one in here today if you guys are cool with that um there we go so you can kind of Crash it into things crash it into yourself doesn’t really hurt you um but anyways these are really cool tools just to learn how to fly um and then once you learn how to fly the next level up would be kind of these mid-range uh quadricopter which is what the DJI Phantom falls under um they’re still relatively affordable around $700 to $2,000 um and we’ll get into this product specifically like I saying but uh these are really for you guys where you can still have some fun learn to experiment learn to do all kinds of crazy shots that you want to get and not worry about crashing it because these are all plastic parts this is all plastic blades it’s a GoPro everything’s pretty affordable pretty replaceable um you know and you’ll see it’s relatively inexpensive once you start getting into the next level um so the next level would be kind of a more of a DSLR Rigg uh and this is just a whole another world when you get into what it takes to actually operate one of these things so with this you’re kind of wherever the wherever the front of this is is where the shots going to be um when you get into these things you have full controls of the camera so what that means is I have pan tilt full 360 and then there’s somebody operating the helicopter so it’s kind of a three-man crew so you can kind of see over here uh you have one person flying the helicopter I’m usually operating uh the camera and then you’ll have a person managing all the video coming in so there’s usually a video camera on the back of the Quad or the helicopter and then there’s a there’s a feed coming out of the actual camera um so this is a much much bigger scale of production uh and a much bigger investment uh so it’s kind of a different Ballpark and then uh these are kind of what I’m calling heavy lifters and this is a totally experimental totally custom uh kind of part of the industry uh the r kind of range from $40 to $100,000 plus you mean you can get really crazy if you want to but basically the only people uh that are capable of flying Reds or alexas or any kind of major camera are building their own uh helicopters and doing it fully based around the camera so this is this one in particular is about an 8ft wingspan uh and it’s built for the Red Epic and and it’s kind of something and we’ll talk about that a little bit that we’ve we’re really kind of focusing on this right now and we partner with people like this company which is xcam run by a guy named Jordy Klein uh and he pretty much builds rigs for cameras and so he’s got a whole arsenal of these crazy machines and then we get to fly them and I get to operate the camera so it’s really fun um so I thought it’d be cool now to kind of focus on the DJI Phantom specifically uh this quadricopter has really become really popular especially for you know people like me just kind of getting into this and for students in particular um just because it’s again really affordable really durable but you can get really great shots especially with the GoPro uh you can get a base level model for about five $500 uh to 700 depending on what the model is and then Allin when you get fpvs get the gimbal uh get the GoPro you’re looking at about $17 to $2,000 and the other cool thing about this is It’s really portable so as you saw in the demo reel like fortunately we get to travel for work so I kind of bring this thing with me wherever I go and I just kind of set it up I can be kind of up and flying within two minutes of opening the box and then be closed and walk away and no one knows I was there kind of thing uh but it’s really portable it’s really fun to travel with and uh this is a really huge feature for this product because when you have the the bigger ones like I was showing you it’s about an hour setup so you kind of have to put it together get all the links working right and it’s not just like put it on the ground and start flying uh so to talk specifically again about this they’ve done some really cool things with the flight controls um basically this thing’s constantly communicating with GPS for its position in space so as you can see here here I’m not touching anything on the controls and it’s floating there uh with a normal helicopter you’re pretty much tweaking this thing constantly to just basically hover and it’s not autoc correcting anything uh so this is full fullon autoc corrected fullon hovering without me touching any of the controls and that’s a really big thing for safety it’s a really big thing for for new pilots uh kind of getting into this you don’t really have to know how to fly uh conventional RC helicopters to really get into this you can kind of day one be flying which is pretty pretty unheard of um some of the modes or actually no let’s talk about the gimbal so this is really the distinguishing factor in my opinion of of this machine uh they did a really good job with this it’s a very simple Gimbal and basically all this is is a horizon stabilizer so as you can see I’m kind of whipping this thing around you’d never really be doing this in a real scenario but uh all it’s doing is keeping the Horizon stable so you’re going to get insanely smooth shots and the again the GoPro is just incredible now so you can really do some amazing things with this little machine uh a couple modes that are really cool for beginners um and this one’s called GPS mode and uh again like this is kind of safety based uh but what happens here is you can see when I let go of the controls here basically the quad’s just going to stop wherever I let go of it so kind of the idea is if you ever get too far away or if you ever feel like you’re out of control just let go and everything just kind of hovers and then you can kind of walk up and get your bearings and figure out where you are bring it back continue your shot whatever you want to do um or if you kind of want to come to a slow stop you can kind of figure out where your space is and it’ll kind of easy ease into it um another mode that’s really nice is uh it’s called attitude mode and so what this is you saw a lot of the shots where I was kind of flying through trees and uh doing weird crazy shots is what I’ll do is I’ll try to find a straight line and I try to have no obstructions within that straight line and what this mode does is basically whatever position front back left right I let go of the controls uh this will keep going in that position in a straight line so you can get really cool Dolly shots uh you know where you’re going to be going if you let go of it so you kind of can set up shots with that um so we shot this stuff yesterday uh and I was just going to show a couple shots that we shot with our my friend Dylan here uh in the park just kind of uh illustrating some of these modes [Music] all right very cool so I guess I have the main thing I want to talk about moving forward is that obviously we have a lot of people who might be interested in this technology uh you know it’s nice that it is becoming more and more affordable uh I I just was wondering I already saw that there’s a price discrepancy when I was looking online it you said you can get the base model for around $500 but then it’s about 1,700 uh for all the add-ons can you maybe go over the specifics about what is really needed in terms of the add-ons and what you can get away without yeah so I mean if you look at this model particularly this would kind of be what I would suggest as your base level of kind of getting into the game uh you really need the gimbal to be doing to smooth shots if you don’t have it it’s just really going to be pretty shaky uh there’s a couple other add-ons which uh is a thing called an fpv which I don’t know if you’ve seen this but basically you’ll see guys like wearing goggles and flying this thing uh it’s basically a video feed coming from the GoPro so you can see what you’re shooting and and that’s really kind of the next level but you don’t necessarily need it but I I usually fly with one of those with these and are you going through the Wi-Fi from the GoPro in order no it’s a microwave signal oh microwave signal so you have actual antenna coming out of the back of the quad and then you have an antenna plugged into a TV well I know that the the Hero 3 actually has a Wi-Fi signal that you can send I mean do you think that’s something that is the range just too great that you might not be able to send it that’s like 30 ft I think 30t you know you’re 30 ft right off the bat with this thing so so you’re saying that um that the gimbal is really the most important add-on yeah I would say so I mean it’s just a stabilization issue I mean you know basically what’s happening is when you do a turn the the quad’s kind of doing a right or left pitch and if you’re not if you don’t have the gimbal the camera in The Horizon’s going to do that so basically it just keeps this thing really steady so I mean I really love watching that reel I think that there’s just so many beautiful shots there uh you know when I see that though I feel like I would I would not be able to accomplish that with it it would take weeks of practicing like maybe can you tell us a little bit about how long how much of a learning curve there is with this thing uh well I’ve been flying RC aircraft uh for a long time uh and just kind of i’ I’ve even built my own and and I’ve just kind of been a fan of of doing the sport if you will um but uh it I would say you know you could probably be doing some of those shots within like a month of just like learning to fly I mean like what I would usually do and I still do just to practice is I’ll just kind of go into a field just do figure H just to like get my bearings because what happens is the controls are all fine when everything’s pointing forwards and then when you flip it you instantly have to kind of flip your perspective on how you’re flying uh and actually uh with the DJI Phantom they’ve they’ve done a algorithm where you don’t have to do that and it still flies like so if you’re flying towards yourself you can still go right and it’ll go that way but I just don’t I don’t like to fly that way just cuz I’ve trained myself not to do that but also the I mean some of the best shots I think are when you’re actually coming through the trees and it feels like the branches are just so close and it’s hard to imagine that the camera can even fit through the gaps that you’re putting it through uh I’m just wondering how technically difficult those shots are and kind of also how durable this is because it seems inevitably it’s going to snag a branch it’s going to hit into a wall something bad’s going to happen MH I mean is that is it kind of like investment over once it hits the tree no no not necessarily and and like I was saying before and illustrating with that attitude mode like I try to set a path that’s a straight straight line and I know I can get through it without any obstruction so if you know you have that path you just kind of pull straight back but I mean you definitely I’ve definitely crashed a few of these things um and uh they’re very durable I was flying in the snow a couple weeks ago and I it flew and somehow landed upside down in the snow and it got soaking wet pulled it out hour later it was fine so this thing is like pretty much a Workhorse cool nice so can you tell us a little bit about you know one thing I I I like about the product demo is that we really get to showcase the DJI Phantom we get to see what it’s capable of doing uh what What’s the strategy that goes into you know why why are you doing product demos why you know what type of applicable use does this particular uh quadcopter have for the company for the company yeah so for us um we we do a lot of original content for ourselves and so what we did with this piece is uh we do product tests and and we kind of try to Target Outlets like The Verge Gizmodo and Gadget Tech blogs uh that we want to push our product so that we can get more eyes uh on our company uh and get the people who you know would use our video Services coming to us and seeing our website and so we do uh you know all kinds of different product tests and this was one of them uh but you know it’s just a it’s just a really good way for us to reinforce our brand you know that we’re cutting edge and that we do cool visuals and and that kind of thing so it’s it’s kind of a strategy piece for us but uh it’s fun too so and I know so your background is in wake boarding and you got started making these documentaries for fuel TV about wakeboarding and extreme sports in general um you know it seems like there’s really obvious practical applications for this in terms of sports especially exem extreme sports uh can you talk a little bit about how you imagine this as a tool being used uh for that type of a space but also what else could it be good for in terms of people who might not be getting involved in sports film making Sports specifically I mean they had one in the Olympics uh this year I don’t know if anybody saw it but there in the uh slope style and all the halfpipe and everything you would see this quad just going flying down the mountains which was really cool um so obviously in action sports you know like and you saw like some of our boat surfing stuff like I you can be flying uh while you’re driving the boat and getting really cool shots so it’s just a in my opinion it’s just a really cool angle to get that you really couldn’t get before without a helicopter um but specifically for General film making you know I I think it’s probably uh a b-roll shot or two uh but the the great thing about all these all the way up to the $100,000 models is that even at that even at those prices you’re still insanely more affordable than an actual helicopter so I mean that’s like the biggest plus to all these things is you can be getting the helicopter shot for this crazy low price uh at least when you buy them and and go all in with them so it’s it’s kind of a a win-win yeah and so can you talk just maybe a little bit more about I mean so you’ve been filming with the GoPro with the Phantom and then at a certain point it’s necessary you say you know what the GoPro is not going to be able to get what I’m after here at what point do you say we really need to go up to FS or SLR or we need to go up to the red it just depends honestly on on what you want to shoot uh and the quality of footage you want to get you know obviously the GoPro is pretty limited as to how how you know what lenses you can put on it and the actual footage you know it’s just really up to you what the kind of shot you want uh would determine what helicopter you should fly uh and the level of production value that you really want to get I don’t know when that is for you guys but I guess it’s different for everybody yeah yeah so can you just tell us also about the um I mean I thought that was amazing shot that you had of that rig with the red can you just you said it takes an hour to set up like maybe tell us more about that entire process so basically these guys are getting giant sheets of uh carbon carbon graphite and then giant rods of carbon graphite and they’ll see and see all these machine pieces out and then build it so it’s not like you can just put this thing in a case and and just run like you have to take it fully apart and then when you get to location you have to kind of reassemble screw all the screws in balance the camera do all the stuff get all your feeds going and then you start testing to fly see if you can get the shot and then once all the tests are done then you can actually do the shot so it’s it’s probably actually about two hours before you’re shooting but I bet the footage is amazing oh yeah yeah I mean 4K RC heli footage is the craziest thing you’ve ever seen do they have larger range I mean so what what’s the range on one of these things uh I think technically the the radio frequency will go about a mile if I’m not mistaken but uh and maybe this would be a good time to talk about kind of some of the regulations involved in in RC flying um but uh you’re supposed to stay under 400 ft in line of sight with all kind of recreational RC vehicles um and that’s FAA required kind of deal but you can you can fly uh in most places as long as it’s not a highly populated area kind of thing so what other safety concerns do you worry about out in the field uh safety wise you just you never know I mean there’s it’s a wireless flying machine so uh you don’t really want to be in a place where this thing can go out of control and go spiraling into a crowded audience you know um that’s just not the best idea so you try to want to fly in safe places open fields that kind of thing uh not around people um and and actually right now uh it is technically illegal to before hire uh to run a business around flying quads or around RC helicopter aerial videos in general according to the FAA so uh so it’s kind of like this whole conversation right now about you know what what’s going to happen to the industry um which is kind of interesting I mean it is interesting because there’s it’s a much broader conversation than just the film industry and how they’re going to start using these RC helicopters you know obviously there’s the military drones that everybody’s talking about but then I know that they just kind of designated Six States and Florida is not one of them as testing grounds for these types of devices uh I mean so what but I mean it’s it’s amazing to me that it you can’t use it commercially at the moment I mean so what is your hopes for this technology where do you think we’re heading my hope would be that uh it does become legal but it becomes highly regulated uh and I think I’m a proponent of of Regulation because you’re in airspace you know I mean uh I think it can potentially be really dangerous um and they’re not toys you know they’re they’re serious machines I mean you saw the the big one it’s an 8ft wingspan I mean that’s literally a helicopter with really fast moving blades so you don’t want to mess around with these things um but I do think you know eventually like the conversation will will lead to uh hopefully uh us being able to run legitimate businesses and and selling services around flying machines which would be great for everybody I think I mean it definitely also seems like there’s a lot of energy that’s being invested into this technology so you would imagine that even though the price point is already coming down that it’s going to keep going down and that the equipment is going to become better and better and that hopefully they figure it out right I think so I think I I I don’t know I’m not really that much of a part of the conversation and I’m by no means like uh uh someone to speak about the law I would suggest if you do want to learn more about this go to the faa’s website and read everything they have to say because it’s pretty interesting um but I do know in 2015 there’s going to be some new rules and regulations coming out and I think that’s still kind of an ongoing conversation as to what that’s going to be and can you talk what about I know that there’s also some privacy concerns there’s also some concerns in terms of Rights and releases I mean do you have any thoughts about that I don’t I haven’t researched enough into that world to really speak on it but uh I think that’s kind of the Crux of the other side of the argument is that uh you know these things are potential um there’s some potential privacy issues with this stuff and I think uh you know it’s kind of hard to to Really pinpoint it all into one place sort of deal well I mean it’s interesting just because historically I mean the camera stays on the ground and you have total control over exactly where it goes and you can’t I mean you can’t drive into someone’s property and put down your camera but now all of a sudden once the camera gets Airborne it’s sort of ort of brings in this whole new set of legal issues that need to be thought through and yep yeah I mean so so I mean I guess the thing is do you feel like this is just for hobbyists or I mean in terms of what me I think there’s serious issues that need to be dealt with I just you know it it’s not going to unless unless it’s just a total ban on all of it it’s not going to there people are going to start still make these things you know and people are going to still fly them for recreation so there it’s going to have to be dealt with some way shape or form I just don’t know what that is so I’m sitting on the sidelines waiting see the sideline is waiting so let’s let’s kind of go back to the product itself um can you tell us you know I saw a video that you posted where you actually have you know you were talking about you transmit the radio frequency how much of your cinematography is based off of the visuals you’re getting in terms of feedback from the camera and how much of it is you just looking at the device in the air and trying to pick a line and stay with it with this one in particular I I I haven’t been flying with an fpv which is what you call the visual stuff um so I just kind of think I know where the shots going to go and I hope I get it um but when you’re flying with the bigger machines I mean I don’t I’m not even looking outside of the screen like I’m basically just focusing on the screen and then I have a radio uh right here where I’m just kind of controlling the camera and doing whatever I want want so so I mean it sounds like then it just has to do with practicing with becoming more comfortable with the controls and the device itself yeah and and when you get into the bigger rigs like I I would basically be directing where the helicopter goes and so I would say Okay I want to start here I want to end way over there and then while he’s flying in that straight line or whatever he’s doing uh I’ll just kind of do all my shots and point straight down and do whatever I want so so when he was in the field kind of walking through the field I mean are you do you have your shots planned out when you take the helicopter shots yeah uh not really I just said do a couple walk cycles and I just tried to follow and illustrate some stuff I mean with this thing you can shoot a bunch of shots really quickly and just I probably shot 10 different shots and use two of them you know what I mean so it’s just like shoot as much as you want with these things so basically just you’re you’re doing a flyby you’re just trying to get some vertical motion stuff like that yep yeah it’s cool so in terms of I I mean I I hate to leave the Phantom but you know I I keep thinking about these higher quality models uh can you talk I mean we talked about the high range now the low range can you talk about that middle range right there where you’re mounting the SLR that’s kind of where we’re as a business like trying to figure out if we want to get into and it’s obviously like a lot more of an investment uh I think going back to the current regulations um it’s kind of like we’re still trying to figure out if we really want to step it up because there’s a chance that this could not be legal in 2015 and and now we’re stuck with this machine that we can’t sell a service around so uh it’s still going to be fun and I’ll still probably get one just cuz I want to shoot with it but uh you know it’s that’s kind of the I think that’s where everybody’s at there’s people that are that are definitely doing it um but it’s too much of a risk for us right now to put that much of an investment in it so what would the investment be in that middle range uh uh $1 to $20,000 yeah so it’s just and it’s a lot more work I mean you have to have the customer service from the actual vendor to like fix this thing cuz like this you just go buy a new one if it doesn’t work the the bigger ones like if one wire pops you got to send it back it’s 3 weeks so so you are working then with private companies that assemble these things custom made yeah it’s like hobby shops basically and they’ll build it for you and then if it breaks you send it back and they’ll probably send you a laner or something so so you actually go into them and you say here’s my camera here’s what I’m wanting to do they weigh the camera they try to you know they do their own or do they have a plan that they work from or they just make build it totally C I basically say here’s the camera I want to fly and then they build those mid-range or $10,000 ones around the camera and balance all the gimbals and everything around it yeah I mean so I know this is an octocopter we’re talking about OCT we’re talking about quadcopters but I also saw that you know as you get to the larger models that often times there can be eight different propellers I mean so do you have any recommend but then I also saw when you had that red mounted a single blade I mean so what what are the considerations in terms of stability in terms of which one of those Technologies it just depends on how aggressive you want to fly so uh with the bigger ones you know they’re very kind of aggressive and they can do a lot more things than the big big huge huge octocopters and the big huge octocopters are kind of more like Cadillacs in the air uh is what we call them but they just kind of move real slow but they’re really steady uh and then when those single blades I mean those things are crazy I mean you can go 90 M an hour flying down the flying through the air with a red strap to it it’s pretty cool so I mean so obviously that is then a replacement for a helicopter right is what that I mean that essentially is a helicopter I mean you’re not yeah and they’re going to get bigger I mean the uh the guy who we fly with with the big one he’s building one for an Alexa which has a 50 50 pound limit as to what it can carry so that’s a big machine I mean if that thing’s flying 90 M an hour and you’re not allowed to let these things go out of your line of sight how do you even navigate that as a filmmaker you can see it you know pretty far but but it’s really up to the helicopter operator to really kind of say like I can’t go that far uh kind of thing but it’ll go like you can go a mile if you want to right and I guess the bigger they get the farther you can see them too right it’s just you really lose perspective at a certain level so even with these little things you know you get 500 ft in front of you and it’s gone you don’t know which way is Right which way is left and you start trying to bring it back and you’re going the wrong way and it keeps going further kind of thing so you kind of want to keep keep it within a range that you can manage sort of deal so in terms of pros and cons I’m wondering if you could we’ve talked a lot about the pros I think we’ve been talking about why these are really good tools we’ve been talking about how they’re getting more affordable do and I mean some cons in terms of the legality of it I mean are there other cons that we should consider before investing in something like this uh no I mean I think we’ve covered it I I just think especially you know I think since we’re talking to students and and you guys about thinking about getting into it I just really think that these mid-range to like lower cost uh and and highly durable machines are probably the best um and and it’s just trainers you know like we just Ed this as a as as a fun tool you know like just to get cool shots and I just I just like flying these things and I like training with them so um this is primarily what I use most of the time so that this would be my suggestion if you’re going to really get into it but I mean so you already told me though before that this is your fourth Phantom oh yeah yeah we have like I have like two backups right now oh so I mean so it’s not that the three the three first ones just went down no the three first ones went down they went down yeah do you have any spectacular death stories for any of your Phantoms oh man um I mean yeah let’s see we had we had one hanging out of a tree from the gimbal wire and uh one of my friends had to climb up the tree and get it and it still worked which was nice I don’t know these things just they’re so durable I crash I don’t even worry about crashing them that’s why I think probably like you see crazy shots cuz I’m like not worried if I hit something cuz I have a backup and it’ll just go fly right after that so so you just kind of retired it and took it out of commission yeah but like they usually work after you crash in what usually breaks is the gimbal uh and so uh what happens is we just use them as trainers and and kind of like some of the guys in the company will start flying them and and we’ll just mess around with them so they don’t all go to waste cool well uh any any parting thoughts for our audience in terms of people who are seriously considering investing in this technology uh yeah like AB if you guys have any question question for me like I’m happy to be a resource for any of this stuff um and get into it it’s fun it’s uh it’s a great little tool to get some really cool shots cool well thank you Chase I appreciate it .

1.439 my name is JP een I am a course director
1.439 in the new Film Production Masters
1.439 program it is a wonderful honor today to
1.439 be able to introduce Chase Heavener he
1.439 is a full sale digital media grad and a
1.439 founder of visual and video production
1.439 company fiction which is based right
1.439 here in Winter Park so we&;re all
1.439 grateful for that right Chase&;s career
1.439 started as a professional wakeboarder he
1.439 then began producing short wakeboarding
1.439 documentaries which led him into
1.439 broadcast production with fuel TV about
1.439 five years ago he decided to make the
1.439 move out of wakeboarding and start his
1.439 production company fiction some of the
1.439 companies fiction has worked with
1.439 include ESPN Publix the International
1.439 Space Station Tim TBO Shephard Ferry
1.439 Oakley and another a number of high-end
1.439 visual Brands uh Chase thank you for
1.439 being with us thank you I really
1.439 appreciate it uh Chase is gonna we&;re
1.439 going to talk about quadcopters today he
1.439 has a presentation he&;d like to show us
1.439 and then we&;re going to enter into a Q&A
1.439 so take it away cool well thank you for
1.439 having me everyone um my name is Chase
1.439 heaver as you heard and I run a
1.439 production company here in Winter Park
1.439 um I&;m here today to talk to you guys
1.439 about quadcopters RC aerial photography
1.439 um and how that kind of applies to you
1.439 guys and how you can get into it uh and
1.439 so what I thought would be cool was
1.439 first we would show one of our reels for
1.439 the company uh and then I don&;t know if
1.439 the slides are up yet um and then we
1.439 kind of get into some price points kind
1.439 of the technology how to get started
1.439 kind of from base level to Total
1.439 profession professional totally crazy
1.439 custom build of helicopters and then
1.439 focus on uh this one in particular which
1.439 is the DJI Phantom uh and this is what I
1.439 shot this reel on completely um and
1.439 we&;ll really get into this because I
1.439 think this applies to you guys the best
1.439 um so I think what would be cool now is
1.439 to play the real

1.439 [Applause]
1.439 [Music]
1.439 he
1.439 so let&;s talk about getting started um
1.439 there&;s a lot of really cool products
1.439 out there especially for you guys who
1.439 have never flown before um the way I got
1.439 started was with these little
1.439 Micro RC helicopters they&;re about this
1.439 big kind of range from this to kind of
1.439 maybe about 4×4 um and they&;re really
1.439 cool they&;re really durable uh I kind of
1.439 fly them in my free time in my office
1.439 inside and just get to know how to how
1.439 to fly and how to practice with these
1.439 things I thought it&; be fun to fly this
1.439 one in here today if you guys are cool
1.439 with that um there we
1.439 go so you can kind of Crash it into
1.439 things crash it into yourself doesn&;t
1.439 really hurt you um but anyways these are
1.439 really cool tools just to learn how to
1.439 fly um and then once you learn how to
1.439 fly the next level up would be kind of
1.439 these mid-range uh quadricopter which is
1.439 what the DJI Phantom falls under um
1.439 they&;re still relatively affordable
1.439 around $700 to $2,000 um and we&;ll get
1.439 into this product specifically like I
1.439 saying but uh these are really for you
1.439 guys where you can still have some fun
1.439 learn to experiment learn to do all
1.439 kinds of crazy shots that you want to
1.439 get and not worry about crashing it
1.439 because these are all plastic parts this
1.439 is all plastic blades it&;s a GoPro
1.439 everything&;s pretty affordable pretty
1.439 replaceable um you know and you&;ll see
1.439 it&;s relatively inexpensive once you
1.439 start getting into the next level um so
1.439 the next level would be kind of a more
1.439 of a DSLR Rigg uh and this is just a
1.439 whole another world when you get into
1.439 what it takes to actually operate one of
1.439 these things so with this you&;re kind of
1.439 wherever the wherever the front of this
1.439 is is where the shots going to be um
1.439 when you get into these things you have
1.439 full controls of the camera so what that
1.439 means is I have pan tilt full 360 and
1.439 then there&;s somebody operating the
1.439 helicopter so it&;s kind of a three-man
1.439 crew so you can kind of see over here uh
1.439 you have one person flying the
1.439 helicopter I&;m usually operating uh the
1.439 camera and then you&;ll have a person
1.439 managing all the video coming in so
1.439 there&;s usually a video camera on the
1.439 back of the Quad or the helicopter and
1.439 then there&;s a there&;s a feed coming out
1.439 of the actual camera um so this is a
1.439 much much bigger scale of production uh
1.439 and a much bigger investment uh so it&;s
1.439 kind of a different Ballpark and then uh
1.439 these are kind of what I&;m calling heavy
1.439 lifters and this is a totally
1.439 experimental totally custom uh kind of
1.439 part of the industry uh the r kind of
1.439 range from $40 to $100,000 plus you mean
1.439 you can get really crazy if you want to
1.439 but basically the only people uh that
1.439 are capable of flying Reds or alexas or
1.439 any kind of major camera are building
1.439 their own uh helicopters and doing it
1.439 fully based around the camera so this is
1.439 this one in particular is about an 8ft
1.439 wingspan uh and it&;s built for the Red
1.439 Epic and and it&;s kind of something and
1.439 we&;ll talk about that a little bit that
1.439 we&;ve we&;re really kind of focusing on
1.439 this right now and we partner with
1.439 people like this company which is xcam
1.439 run by a guy named Jordy Klein uh and he
1.439 pretty much builds rigs for cameras and
1.439 so he&;s got a whole arsenal of these
1.439 crazy machines and then we get to fly
1.439 them and I get to operate the camera so
1.439 it&;s really fun um so I thought it&;d be
1.439 cool now to kind of focus on the DJI
1.439 Phantom specifically uh this
1.439 quadricopter has really become really
1.439 popular especially for you know people
1.439 like me just kind of getting into this
1.439 and for students in particular um just
1.439 because it&;s again really affordable
1.439 really durable but you can get really
1.439 great shots especially with the GoPro uh
1.439 you can get a base level model for about
1.439 five $500 uh to 700 depending on what
1.439 the model is and then Allin when you get
1.439 fpvs get the gimbal uh get the GoPro
1.439 you&;re looking at about $17 to
1.439 $2,000 and the other cool thing about
1.439 this is It&;s really portable so as you
1.439 saw in the demo reel like fortunately we
1.439 get to travel for work so I kind of
1.439 bring this thing with me wherever I go
1.439 and I just kind of set it up I can be
1.439 kind of up and flying within two minutes
1.439 of opening the box and then be closed
1.439 and walk away and no one knows I was
1.439 there kind of thing uh but it&;s really
1.439 portable it&;s really fun to travel with
1.439 and uh this is a really huge feature for
1.439 this product because when you have the
1.439 the bigger ones like I was showing you
1.439 it&;s about an hour setup so you kind of
1.439 have to put it together get all the
1.439 links working right and it&;s not just
1.439 like put it on the ground and start
1.439 flying uh so to talk specifically again
1.439 about this they&;ve done some really cool
1.439 things with the flight controls
1.439 um basically this thing&;s constantly
1.439 communicating with GPS for its position
1.439 in space so as you can see here here I&;m
1.439 not touching anything on the controls
1.439 and it&;s floating there uh with a normal
1.439 helicopter you&;re pretty much tweaking
1.439 this thing constantly to just basically
1.439 hover and it&;s not autoc correcting
1.439 anything uh so this is full fullon autoc
1.439 corrected fullon hovering without me
1.439 touching any of the controls and that&;s
1.439 a really big thing for safety it&;s a
1.439 really big thing for for new pilots uh
1.439 kind of getting into this you don&;t
1.439 really have to know how to fly uh
1.439 conventional RC helicopters to really
1.439 get into this you can kind of day one be
1.439 flying which is pretty pretty unheard of
1.439 um some of the modes or actually no
1.439 let&;s talk about the gimbal so this is
1.439 really the distinguishing factor in my
1.439 opinion of of this machine uh they did a
1.439 really good job with this it&;s a very
1.439 simple Gimbal and basically all this is
1.439 is a horizon stabilizer so as you can
1.439 see I&;m kind of whipping this thing
1.439 around you&;d never really be doing this
1.439 in a real scenario but uh all it&;s doing
1.439 is keeping the Horizon stable so you&;re
1.439 going to get insanely smooth shots and
1.439 the again the GoPro is just incredible
1.439 now so you can really do some amazing
1.439 things with this little
1.439 machine uh a couple modes that are
1.439 really cool for beginners um and this
1.439 one&;s called GPS mode and uh again like
1.439 this is kind of safety based uh but what
1.439 happens here is you can see when I let
1.439 go of the controls here basically the
1.439 quad&;s just going to stop wherever I let
1.439 go of it so kind of the idea is if you
1.439 ever get too far away or if you ever
1.439 feel like you&;re out of control just let
1.439 go and everything just kind of hovers
1.439 and then you can kind of walk up and get
1.439 your bearings and figure out where you
1.439 are bring it back continue your shot
1.439 whatever you want to do um or if you
1.439 kind of want to come to a slow stop you
1.439 can kind of figure out where your space
1.439 is and it&;ll kind of easy ease into it
1.439 um another mode that&;s really nice is uh
1.439 it&;s called attitude mode and so what
1.439 this is you saw a lot of the shots where
1.439 I was kind of flying through trees and
1.439 uh doing weird crazy shots is what I&;ll
1.439 do is I&;ll try to find a straight line
1.439 and I try to have no obstructions within
1.439 that straight line and what this mode
1.439 does
1.439 is basically whatever position front
1.439 back left right I let go of the controls
1.439 uh this will keep going in that position
1.439 in a straight line so you can get really
1.439 cool Dolly shots uh you know where
1.439 you&;re going to be going if you let go
1.439 of it so you kind of can set up shots
1.439 with that um so we shot this stuff
1.439 yesterday uh and I was just going to
1.439 show a couple shots that we shot with
1.439 our my friend Dylan here uh in the park
1.439 just kind of uh illustrating some of
1.439 these modes
1.439 [Music]
1.439 all right very
1.439 cool so I guess I have
1.439 the main thing I want to talk about
1.439 moving forward is that obviously we have
1.439 a lot of people who might be interested
1.439 in this technology uh you know it&;s nice
1.439 that it is becoming more and more
1.439 affordable uh I I just was wondering I
1.439 already saw that there&;s a price
1.439 discrepancy when I was looking online it
1.439 you said you can get the base model for
1.439 around $500 but then it&;s about 1,700 uh
1.439 for all the add-ons can you maybe go
1.439 over the specifics about what is really
1.439 needed in terms of the add-ons and what
1.439 you can get away without yeah so I mean
1.439 if you look at this model particularly
1.439 this would kind of be what I would
1.439 suggest as your base level of kind of
1.439 getting into the game uh you really need
1.439 the gimbal to be doing to smooth shots
1.439 if you don&;t have it it&;s just really
1.439 going to be pretty shaky uh there&;s a
1.439 couple other add-ons which uh is a thing
1.439 called an fpv which I don&;t know if
1.439 you&;ve seen this but basically you&;ll
1.439 see guys like wearing goggles and flying
1.439 this thing uh it&;s basically a video
1.439 feed coming from the GoPro so you can
1.439 see what you&;re shooting and and that&;s
1.439 really kind of the next level but you
1.439 don&;t necessarily need it but I I
1.439 usually fly with one of those with these
1.439 and are you going through the Wi-Fi from
1.439 the GoPro in order no it&;s a microwave
1.439 signal oh microwave signal so you have
1.439 actual antenna coming out of the back of
1.439 the quad and then you have an antenna
1.439 plugged into a TV well I know that the
1.439 the Hero 3 actually has a Wi-Fi signal
1.439 that you can send I mean do you think
1.439 that&;s something that is the range just
1.439 too great that you might not be able to
1.439 send it that&;s like 30 ft I think 30t
1.439 you know you&;re 30 ft right off the bat
1.439 with this thing so so you&;re saying that
1.439 um that the gimbal is really the most
1.439 important add-on yeah I would say so I
1.439 mean it&;s just a stabilization issue I
1.439 mean you know basically what&;s happening
1.439 is when you do a turn the the quad&;s
1.439 kind of doing a right or left pitch and
1.439 if you&;re not if you don&;t have the
1.439 gimbal the camera in The Horizon&;s going
1.439 to do that so basically it just keeps
1.439 this thing really steady so I mean I
1.439 really love watching that reel I think
1.439 that there&;s just so many beautiful
1.439 shots there uh you know when I see that
1.439 though I feel like I would I would not
1.439 be able to accomplish that with it it
1.439 would take weeks of practicing like
1.439 maybe can you tell us a little bit about
1.439 how long how much of a learning curve
1.439 there is with this thing uh well I&;ve
1.439 been flying RC aircraft uh for a long
1.439 time uh and just kind of i&; I&;ve even
1.439 built my own and and I&;ve just kind of
1.439 been a fan of of doing the sport if you
1.439 will um but uh it I would say you know
1.439 you could probably be doing some of
1.439 those shots within like a month of just
1.439 like learning to fly I mean like what I
1.439 would usually do and I still do just to
1.439 practice is I&;ll just kind of go into a
1.439 field just do figure H just to like get
1.439 my bearings because what happens is the
1.439 controls are all fine when everything&;s
1.439 pointing forwards and then when you flip
1.439 it you instantly have to kind of flip
1.439 your perspective on how you&;re flying uh
1.439 and actually uh with the DJI Phantom
1.439 they&;ve they&;ve done a algorithm where
1.439 you don&;t have to do that and it still
1.439 flies like so if you&;re flying towards
1.439 yourself you can still go right and
1.439 it&;ll go that way but I just don&;t I
1.439 don&;t like to fly that way just cuz I&;ve
1.439 trained myself not to do that
1.439 but also the I mean some of the best
1.439 shots I think are when you&;re actually
1.439 coming through the trees and it feels
1.439 like the branches are just so close and
1.439 it&;s hard to imagine that the camera can
1.439 even fit through the gaps that you&;re
1.439 putting it through uh I&;m just wondering
1.439 how technically difficult those shots
1.439 are and kind of also how durable this is
1.439 because it seems inevitably it&;s going
1.439 to snag a branch it&;s going to hit into
1.439 a wall something bad&;s going to happen
1.439 MH I mean is that is it kind of like
1.439 investment over once it hits the tree no
1.439 no not necessarily and and like I was
1.439 saying before and illustrating with that
1.439 attitude mode like I try to set a path
1.439 that&;s a straight straight line and I
1.439 know I can get through it without any
1.439 obstruction so if you know you have that
1.439 path you just kind of pull straight back
1.439 but I mean you definitely I&;ve
1.439 definitely crashed a few of these things
1.439 um and uh they&;re very durable I was
1.439 flying in the snow a couple weeks ago
1.439 and I it flew and somehow landed upside
1.439 down in the snow and it got soaking wet
1.439 pulled it out hour later it was fine so
1.439 this thing is like pretty much a
1.439 Workhorse cool
1.439 nice so can you tell us a little bit
1.439 about you know one thing I I I like
1.439 about the product demo is that we really
1.439 get to showcase the DJI Phantom we get
1.439 to see what it&;s capable of doing uh
1.439 what What&;s the strategy that goes
1.439 into you know why why are you doing
1.439 product demos why you know what type of
1.439 applicable use does this
1.439 particular uh quadcopter have for the
1.439 company for the company yeah so for us
1.439 um we we do a lot of original content
1.439 for ourselves and so what we did with
1.439 this piece is uh we do product tests and
1.439 and we kind of try to Target Outlets
1.439 like The Verge Gizmodo and Gadget Tech
1.439 blogs uh that we want to push our
1.439 product so that we can get more eyes uh
1.439 on our company uh and get the people who
1.439 you know would use our video Services
1.439 coming to us and seeing our website and
1.439 so we do uh you know all kinds of
1.439 different product tests and this was one
1.439 of them uh but you know it&;s just a it&;s
1.439 just a really good way for us to
1.439 reinforce our brand you know that we&;re
1.439 cutting edge and that we do cool visuals
1.439 and and that kind of thing so it&;s it&;s
1.439 kind of a strategy piece for us but uh
1.439 it&;s fun too
1.439 so and I know so your background is in
1.439 wake boarding and you got started making
1.439 these documentaries for fuel TV about
1.439 wakeboarding and extreme sports in
1.439 general um you know it seems like
1.439 there&;s really obvious practical
1.439 applications for this in terms of sports
1.439 especially exem extreme sports uh can
1.439 you talk a little bit about how you
1.439 imagine this as a tool being
1.439 used uh for that type of a space but
1.439 also what else could it be good for in
1.439 terms of people who might not be getting
1.439 involved in sports film making Sports
1.439 specifically I mean they had one in the
1.439 Olympics uh this year I don&;t know if
1.439 anybody saw it but there in the uh slope
1.439 style and all the halfpipe and
1.439 everything you would see this quad just
1.439 going flying down the mountains which
1.439 was really cool um so obviously in
1.439 action sports you know like and you saw
1.439 like some of our boat surfing stuff like
1.439 I you can be flying uh while you&;re
1.439 driving the boat and getting really cool
1.439 shots so it&;s just a in my opinion it&;s
1.439 just a really cool angle to get that you
1.439 really couldn&;t get before without a
1.439 helicopter um but specifically for
1.439 General film making you know I I think
1.439 it&;s probably uh a b-roll shot or two uh
1.439 but the the great thing about all these
1.439 all the way up to the $100,000 models is
1.439 that even at that even at those prices
1.439 you&;re still insanely more affordable
1.439 than an actual helicopter so I mean
1.439 that&;s like the biggest plus to all
1.439 these things is you can be getting the
1.439 helicopter shot for this crazy low price
1.439 uh at least when you buy them and and go
1.439 all in with them so it&;s it&;s kind of a
1.439 a win-win yeah and so can you talk just
1.439 maybe a little bit more about I mean so
1.439 you&;ve been filming with the GoPro with
1.439 the Phantom and then at a certain point
1.439 it&;s necessary you say you know what the
1.439 GoPro is not going to be able to get
1.439 what I&;m after here at what point do you
1.439 say we really need to go up to FS or SLR
1.439 or we need to go up to the red it just
1.439 depends honestly on on what you want to
1.439 shoot uh and the quality of footage you
1.439 want to get you know obviously the GoPro
1.439 is pretty limited as to how how you know
1.439 what lenses you can put on it and the
1.439 actual footage you know it&;s just really
1.439 up to you what the kind of shot you want
1.439 uh would determine what helicopter you
1.439 should fly uh and the level of
1.439 production value that you really want to
1.439 get I don&;t know when that is for you
1.439 guys but I guess it&;s different for
1.439 everybody yeah yeah so can you just tell
1.439 us also about the um I mean I thought
1.439 that was amazing shot that you had of
1.439 that rig with the red can you just you
1.439 said it takes an hour to set up like
1.439 maybe tell us more about that entire
1.439 process so basically these guys
1.439 are getting giant sheets of uh carbon
1.439 carbon graphite and then giant rods of
1.439 carbon graphite and they&;ll see and see
1.439 all these machine pieces out and then
1.439 build it so it&;s not like you can just
1.439 put this thing in a case and and just
1.439 run like you have to take it fully apart
1.439 and then when you get to location you
1.439 have to kind of reassemble screw all the
1.439 screws in balance the camera do all the
1.439 stuff get all your feeds going and then
1.439 you start testing to fly see if you can
1.439 get the shot and then once all the tests
1.439 are done then you can actually do the
1.439 shot so it&;s it&;s probably actually
1.439 about two hours before you&;re shooting
1.439 but I bet the footage is amazing oh yeah
1.439 yeah I mean 4K RC heli footage is the
1.439 craziest thing you&;ve ever seen do they
1.439 have larger range I mean so what what&;s
1.439 the range on one of these things uh I
1.439 think technically the the radio
1.439 frequency will go about a mile if I&;m
1.439 not mistaken but uh
1.439 and maybe this would be a good time to
1.439 talk about kind of some of the
1.439 regulations involved in in RC flying um
1.439 but uh you&;re supposed to stay under 400
1.439 ft in line of sight with all kind of
1.439 recreational RC vehicles um and that&;s
1.439 FAA required kind of deal but you can
1.439 you can fly uh in most places as long as
1.439 it&;s not a highly populated area kind of
1.439 thing so what other safety concerns do
1.439 you worry about out in the field uh
1.439 safety wise you just you never know I
1.439 mean there&;s it&;s a wireless flying
1.439 machine so uh you don&;t really want to
1.439 be in a place where this thing can go
1.439 out of control and go spiraling into a
1.439 crowded audience you know um that&;s just
1.439 not the best idea so you try to want to
1.439 fly in safe places open fields that kind
1.439 of thing uh not around people um and and
1.439 actually right now uh it is technically
1.439 illegal to before hire uh to run a
1.439 business around flying quads or around
1.439 RC helicopter aerial videos in general
1.439 according to the FAA so uh so it&;s kind
1.439 of like this whole conversation right
1.439 now about you know what what&;s going to
1.439 happen to the industry um which is kind
1.439 of interesting I mean it is interesting
1.439 because there&;s it&;s a much broader
1.439 conversation than just the film industry
1.439 and how they&;re going to start using
1.439 these RC helicopters you know obviously
1.439 there&;s the military drones that
1.439 everybody&;s talking about but then I
1.439 know that they just kind of designated
1.439 Six States and Florida is not one of
1.439 them as testing grounds for these types
1.439 of devices uh I mean so what but I mean
1.439 it&;s it&;s amazing to me that it you
1.439 can&;t use it commercially at the moment
1.439 I mean so what is your hopes for this
1.439 technology where do you think we&;re
1.439 heading my hope would be that uh it does
1.439 become legal but it becomes highly
1.439 regulated uh and I think I&;m a proponent
1.439 of of Regulation because you&;re in
1.439 airspace you know I mean uh I think it
1.439 can potentially be really dangerous um
1.439 and they&;re not toys you know they&;re
1.439 they&;re serious machines I mean you saw
1.439 the the big one it&;s an 8ft wingspan I
1.439 mean that&;s literally a helicopter with
1.439 really fast moving blades so you don&;t
1.439 want to mess around with these things um
1.439 but I do think you know eventually like
1.439 the conversation will will lead to uh
1.439 hopefully uh us being able to run
1.439 legitimate businesses and and selling
1.439 services around flying machines
1.439 which would be great for everybody I
1.439 think I mean it definitely also seems
1.439 like there&;s a lot of energy that&;s
1.439 being invested into this technology so
1.439 you would imagine that even though the
1.439 price point is already coming down that
1.439 it&;s going to keep going down and that
1.439 the equipment is going to become better
1.439 and better and that hopefully they
1.439 figure it out right I think so I think I
1.439 I I don&;t know I&;m not really that much
1.439 of a part of the conversation and I&;m by
1.439 no means like uh uh someone to speak
1.439 about the law I would suggest if you do
1.439 want to learn more about this go to the
1.439 faa&;s website and read everything they
1.439 have to say because it&;s pretty
1.439 interesting um but I do know in 2015
1.439 there&;s going to be some new rules and
1.439 regulations coming out and I think
1.439 that&;s still kind of an ongoing
1.439 conversation as to what that&;s going to
1.439 be and can you talk what about I know
1.439 that there&;s also some privacy concerns
1.439 there&;s also some concerns in terms of
1.439 Rights and releases I mean do you have
1.439 any thoughts about that I don&;t I
1.439 haven&;t researched enough into that
1.439 world to really speak on it but uh I
1.439 think that&;s kind of the Crux of the
1.439 other side of the argument is that uh
1.439 you know these things are potential um
1.439 there&;s some potential privacy issues
1.439 with this stuff and I think uh you know
1.439 it&;s kind of hard to to Really pinpoint
1.439 it all into one place sort of deal well
1.439 I mean it&;s interesting just
1.439 because historically I mean the camera
1.439 stays on the ground and you have total
1.439 control over exactly where it goes and
1.439 you can&;t I mean you can&;t drive into
1.439 someone&;s property and put down your
1.439 camera but now all of a sudden once the
1.439 camera gets Airborne it&;s sort of ort of
1.439 brings in this whole new set of legal
1.439 issues that need to be thought through
1.439 and
1.439 yep yeah I mean so so I mean I guess the
1.439 thing is do you feel like this
1.439 is just for hobbyists or I mean in terms
1.439 of what me I think there&;s serious
1.439 issues that need to be dealt with I just
1.439 you
1.439 know it it&;s not going to unless unless
1.439 it&;s just a total ban on all of it it&;s
1.439 not going to there people are going to
1.439 start still make these things you know
1.439 and people are going to still fly them
1.439 for recreation so
1.439 there it&;s going to have to be dealt
1.439 with some way shape or form I just don&;t
1.439 know what that is so I&;m sitting on the
1.439 sidelines waiting see the sideline is
1.439 waiting so let&;s let&;s kind of go back
1.439 to the product itself um can you tell us
1.439 you know I saw a video that you posted
1.439 where you actually have you know you
1.439 were talking about you transmit the
1.439 radio frequency how much of your
1.439 cinematography is based off of the
1.439 visuals you&;re getting in terms of
1.439 feedback from the camera and how much of
1.439 it is you just looking at the device in
1.439 the air and trying to pick a line and
1.439 stay with it with this one in particular
1.439 I I I haven&;t been flying with an fpv
1.439 which is what you call the visual stuff
1.439 um so I just kind of think I know where
1.439 the shots going to go and I hope I get
1.439 it um but when you&;re flying with the
1.439 bigger machines I mean I don&;t I&;m not
1.439 even looking outside of the screen like
1.439 I&;m basically just focusing on the
1.439 screen and then I have a radio uh right
1.439 here where I&;m just kind of controlling
1.439 the camera and doing whatever I want
1.439 want so so I mean it sounds like then it
1.439 just has to do with practicing with
1.439 becoming more comfortable with the
1.439 controls and the device itself yeah and
1.439 and when you get into the bigger rigs
1.439 like I I would basically be directing
1.439 where the helicopter goes and so I would
1.439 say Okay I want to start here I want to
1.439 end way over there and then while he&;s
1.439 flying in that straight line or whatever
1.439 he&;s doing uh I&;ll just kind of do all
1.439 my shots and point straight down and do
1.439 whatever I want so so when he was in the
1.439 field kind of walking through the field
1.439 I mean are you do you have your shots
1.439 planned out when you take the helicopter
1.439 shots yeah uh not really I just said do
1.439 a couple walk cycles and I just tried to
1.439 follow and illustrate some stuff I mean
1.439 with this thing you can shoot a bunch of
1.439 shots really quickly and just I probably
1.439 shot 10 different shots and use two of
1.439 them you know what I mean so it&;s just
1.439 like shoot as much as you want with
1.439 these things so basically just you&;re
1.439 you&;re doing a flyby you&;re just trying
1.439 to get some vertical motion stuff like
1.439 that yep
1.439 yeah it&;s
1.439 cool
1.439 so in terms of I I mean I I hate to
1.439 leave the Phantom but you know I I keep
1.439 thinking about these higher quality
1.439 models
1.439 uh can you talk I mean we talked about
1.439 the high range now the low range can you
1.439 talk about that middle range right there
1.439 where you&;re mounting the SLR that&;s
1.439 kind of where we&;re as a business like
1.439 trying to figure out if we want to get
1.439 into and it&;s obviously like a lot more
1.439 of an investment uh I think going back
1.439 to the current regulations um it&;s kind
1.439 of like we&;re still trying to figure out
1.439 if we really want to step it up because
1.439 there&;s a chance that this could not be
1.439 legal in 2015 and and now we&;re stuck
1.439 with this machine that we can&;t sell a
1.439 service around so uh it&;s still going to
1.439 be fun and I&;ll still probably get one
1.439 just cuz I want to shoot with it but uh
1.439 you know it&;s that&;s kind of the I think
1.439 that&;s where everybody&;s at there&;s
1.439 people that are that are definitely
1.439 doing it um but it&;s too much of a risk
1.439 for us right now to put that much of an
1.439 investment in it so what would the
1.439 investment be in that middle range uh uh
1.439 $1 to
1.439 $20,000 yeah so it&;s just and it&;s a lot
1.439 more work I mean you have to have the
1.439 customer service from the actual vendor
1.439 to like fix this thing cuz like this you
1.439 just go buy a new one if it doesn&;t work
1.439 the the bigger ones like if one wire
1.439 pops you got to send it back it&;s 3
1.439 weeks so so you are working then with
1.439 private companies that assemble these
1.439 things custom made yeah it&;s like hobby
1.439 shops basically and they&;ll build it for
1.439 you and then if it breaks you send it
1.439 back and they&;ll probably send you a
1.439 laner or something so so you actually go
1.439 into them and you say here&;s my camera
1.439 here&;s what I&;m wanting to do they weigh
1.439 the camera they try to you know they do
1.439 their own or do they have a plan that
1.439 they work from or they just make build
1.439 it totally C I basically say here&;s the
1.439 camera I want to fly and then they build
1.439 those mid-range or $10,000 ones around
1.439 the camera and balance all the gimbals
1.439 and everything around it yeah I mean so
1.439 I know this is an octocopter we&;re
1.439 talking about OCT we&;re talking about
1.439 quadcopters but I also saw that you know
1.439 as you get to the larger models that
1.439 often times there can be eight different
1.439 propellers I mean so do you have any
1.439 recommend but then I also saw when you
1.439 had that red mounted a single blade I
1.439 mean so what what are the considerations
1.439 in terms of stability in terms of which
1.439 one of those Technologies it just
1.439 depends on how aggressive you want to
1.439 fly so uh with the bigger ones you know
1.439 they&;re very kind of aggressive and they
1.439 can do a lot more things than the big
1.439 big huge huge octocopters and the big
1.439 huge octocopters are kind of more like
1.439 Cadillacs in the air uh is what we call
1.439 them but they just kind of move real
1.439 slow but they&;re really steady uh and
1.439 then when those single blades I mean
1.439 those things are crazy I mean you can go
1.439 90 M an hour flying down the flying
1.439 through the air with a red strap to it
1.439 it&;s pretty cool so I mean so obviously
1.439 that is then a replacement for a
1.439 helicopter right is what that I mean
1.439 that essentially is a helicopter I mean
1.439 you&;re not yeah and they&;re going to get
1.439 bigger I mean the uh the guy who we fly
1.439 with with the big one he&;s building one
1.439 for an Alexa which has a 50 50 pound
1.439 limit as to what it can carry so that&;s
1.439 a big machine I mean if that thing&;s
1.439 flying 90 M an hour and you&;re not
1.439 allowed to let these things go out of
1.439 your line of sight how do you even
1.439 navigate that as a filmmaker you can see
1.439 it you know pretty far but but it&;s
1.439 really up to the helicopter operator to
1.439 really kind of say like I can&;t go that
1.439 far uh kind of thing but it&;ll go like
1.439 you can go a mile
1.439 if you want to right and I guess the
1.439 bigger they get the farther you can see
1.439 them too right it&;s just you really lose
1.439 perspective at a certain level so even
1.439 with these little things you know you
1.439 get 500 ft in front of you and it&;s gone
1.439 you don&;t know which way is Right which
1.439 way is left and you start trying to
1.439 bring it back and you&;re going the wrong
1.439 way and it keeps going further kind of
1.439 thing so you kind of want to keep keep
1.439 it within a range that you can manage
1.439 sort of deal so in terms of pros and
1.439 cons I&;m wondering if you could we&;ve
1.439 talked a lot about the pros I think
1.439 we&;ve been talking about why these are
1.439 really good tools we&;ve been talking
1.439 about how they&;re getting more
1.439 affordable do and I mean some cons in
1.439 terms of the legality of it I mean are
1.439 there other cons that we should consider
1.439 before investing in something like this
1.439 uh no I mean I think we&;ve covered it I
1.439 I just think especially you know I think
1.439 since we&;re talking to students and and
1.439 you guys about thinking about getting
1.439 into it I just really think that these
1.439 mid-range to like lower cost uh and and
1.439 highly durable machines are probably the
1.439 best um and and it&;s just trainers you
1.439 know like we just Ed this as a as as a
1.439 fun tool you know like just to get cool
1.439 shots and I just I just like flying
1.439 these things and I like training with
1.439 them so um this is primarily what I use
1.439 most of the time so that this would be
1.439 my suggestion if you&;re going to really
1.439 get into it but I mean so you already
1.439 told me though before that this is your
1.439 fourth Phantom oh yeah yeah we have like
1.439 I have like two backups right now oh so
1.439 I mean so it&;s not that the three the
1.439 three first ones just went down no the
1.439 three first ones went down they went
1.439 down yeah do you have any spectacular
1.439 death stories for any of your Phantoms
1.439 oh man
1.439 um I mean
1.439 yeah let&;s see we had we had one hanging
1.439 out of a tree from the gimbal
1.439 wire and uh one of my friends had to
1.439 climb up the tree and get it and it
1.439 still worked which was nice I don&;t know
1.439 these things just they&;re so durable I
1.439 crash I don&;t even worry about crashing
1.439 them that&;s why I think probably like
1.439 you see crazy shots cuz I&;m like not
1.439 worried if I hit something cuz I have a
1.439 backup and it&;ll just go fly right after
1.439 that so so you just kind of retired it
1.439 and took it out of commission yeah but
1.439 like they usually work after you crash
1.439 in what usually breaks is the gimbal uh
1.439 and so uh what happens is we just use
1.439 them as trainers and and kind of like
1.439 some of the guys in the company will
1.439 start flying them and and we&;ll just
1.439 mess around with them so they don&;t all
1.439 go to waste cool well uh any any parting
1.439 thoughts for our audience in terms of
1.439 people who are seriously considering
1.439 investing in this technology uh yeah
1.439 like AB if you guys have any question
1.439 question for me like I&;m happy to be a
1.439 resource for any of this stuff um and
1.439 get into it it&;s fun it&;s uh it&;s a
1.439 great little tool to get some really
1.439 cool shots cool well thank you Chase I
1.439 appreciate it
